Karan Johar feels Bollywood going through crisis, says industry needs more superstars

Producer-director Karan Johar has pointed out that currently there is a dearth of superstars in the Hindi movie industry, and only a few actors are good enough to sell the films. Karan insisted that it is difficult to cast any newcomer in a big-budget movie, as it affects its distribution.

“Yes, it is a big problem,” Karan pointed out. “We have hundreds of films to make and there are six (actors) who can sell your film. If you take someone new then you won’t get budget as the film won’t get proper satellite or music rights, or proper release overseas.”

Karan, who is generally known to make films with big stars like Shah Rukh and Salman, made a college-drama Student of the Year with new faces – Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidhharth Malhotra – and it turned out to be a commercial success

The 44-year-old filmmaker, however, insisted that it is uncomfortable for him to make small films. “If you make a small film then you can take a chance,” Karan said. “The moment I think small, I get worried and scared. I am best when I think large or big.”

Karan also added that it is important to make more movies, but lack of viable actors is hampering producers in doing that. The director-producer said that the madness towards cinema is decreasing with time and it not the same like the 80s, when people used to love their stars.
